My daughter is 2 1/2 months old and I am a little worried. She used to eat 4 ounces every 3 hours (she is formula fed) Lately she has been skipping a feeding or she will only eat a couple ounces at a time. Then sometimes she will eat 6 ounces at a time. I was just wondering if this is normal for a newborn baby. Is it something I need to contact the doctor about? When should I really start to worry?

If she looks healthy and isn't acting hungry and if she is maintaining her weight she is ok. Formula food is heavier than breast milk so it stays longer in her stomach which makes her less hungry. It is normal don't worry new Mommy.

As your baby grows and gets older her little stomach will get bigger and she will go longer in between feeds.

The standard for formula is at least 20 oz in 24 hours at her age, any less than this then she will not be getting adequate calories. For example: if she has a 6 oz bottle and about five 3 oz bottles she is fine. Babies are very good at self regulating and eating when they are hungry. Sometimes they may want more to eat and other times thay may not want as much.

The only problem I would see is if she spits up after that 6 oz bottle. 6 oz at this age for most babies is a little too much at once. If she spits up feed her more frequently and give her smaller amounts.

As far as contacting the doctor, if you feel her weight gain is not good or if she is not wetting at least 6 diapers in a day then that is a concern. As far as bowel movements are concerned if she is straining and crying when she uses the bathroom then you should also call the doctor. It is normal for a formula fed baby to have bowel movements anywhere from once a day to every 3 days, any longer than that talk to your pediatrician.

I hope this helps!!!

Good Luck ;)

As long as she is wetting enough diapers, pooping enough, energetic and bright looking she is fine!!!

For breastfed babies its:
WET DIAPERS: 4 - 5+ sopping wet diapers per day.
To feel what a sufficiently wet diaper is like, pour 4-6 tablespoons (60-90 mL) of water into a clean diaper (if baby wets more often, then the amount of urine per diaper may be less). Diapers may be wetter in the morning, especially with older babies. Urine should be pale and mild smelling.

Formula babies poop more than breastfed babies, but as long as she is pooping every 3 days or so I would say she is fine. She will eat what she needs.

Obviously if she starts acting sick, her pee is dark, she is lethargic, vomitting, etc go to a doctor immediatly
