I am alf Greek and half Italian. And this Cyprus guy is popping from everywere. lets look at the reality of this isand. the Island unfortunately belonged to the Turks for centuries then it was leased to the British (like Hong Kong) Duringthis time British strategically placed us, Greeks there. And we tried to claim the whole island. In 73 after a battle Turkey got the North part. Of course all of Europe supports us cause Turks are Muslim. I hink we should all live there happy. South is too commercialized you are correct. North side is beautiful. I dont know about someone's stealing comment (Cyrpus guy's) actually maybe both stole, maybe we stole it from the Turks. Best answer is they should both live there independently. What is funny is Northern Cyprus people and Turks dont really get along. Turkey just supports it because Greece supports the South.
Why cant we all get along?
PS - Ive been to both sides of the island and to Turkey many times I have never een them disrespect anyones religion and ever touch a church. The only one was Hagia Sophia. And later it was turned into a great museum.

I usually avoid political issues but feel urged to respond.
1) Yes, at the moment the northern part of the island is preferable to the south. The south has been raped, exploited, built on etc far more than the north (to date).
2) In 1974 there was a need to react to the "Enosis" movement promulgated by a corrupt (mainland) Greek government. The Turkish invasion of the north could be viewed as self-defence.
3) Real Cypriots (Greek or Turkish) largely resent the presence of the Turks in the north.
4) In the recent referendum the north voted strongly for re-unification, the south rejected this, leaving the north in a state of limbo.
5) The north of the island is being built on at an unprecedented rate without let or hindrance - as the country technically doesn't exist, no-one is overseeing this.
How long can this situation continue? A paradise island is in danger of becoming a gecekondu (slum).
I'm British. I've visited Cyprus on several occasions, north and south. I currently live in Turkey but have many Cypriot friends (Greek and Turkish).

Being from the northern poart of Cyprus I have to say that is the most beautiful side of our country. I dont know about the Turks winning. Try stealing. Taking someone else's land and hotels doesnt make you a winner it makes you a thief. Tourists that use stolen property make them part of the crime. The turkish governemnt is trying to destroy the occupied areas by allowing foreigners to build anything and everywhere without considering the damage to the environment. I guess when you get something that is not yours you cannot show any respect. Just recently they turn a church into a dancing hall and another into a casino. that after they turned churches into stables. It is so painful to see these things in the occupied areas of Cyprus and tourists enjoying the loots only make it worse.

Northern Cyprus is beautiful. I visited it this summer for the first time in over 25 years and it has hardly changed. I am talking about the scenery and friendliness here. Obviously it has changed with time and home developments etc, but the place and people were delightful.
Southern Cyprus is brash, commercialised and an absolute disgrace to what it used to be. Give me the North of the island anytime!!!
