The spout has pipe threads up near the outlet. The short pipe connected to that spout usually but not always is threaded into the water outlet of of your valves. If you plan on installing a new spout, you take a large screwdriver and place it in the spout opening and turn it off. You can also use a pipe wrench or slip-joint plier. If you want to reuse the spout, carefully turn off using the slip-joint pliers but put a towel between the pliers and your spout. It will turn off counter-clockwise.

The spout piece is threaded onto a feedpipe coming through the wall. Facing the spout from inside the tub, wrap a cloth around the spout and with a pipe wrench turn the spout counter clockwise until it is completely off the pipe.

LOL...you connected the water to the shower first? How is it supposed to be "diverted" to the shower then? Your diverter can't do it's job. You'll have to take it out and reconnect it. And you should leave a panel at the back of the wall where you can access this plumbing--never completely close in your bath plumbing! What if you have a leak? You'll have to tear the wall out anyway!

go look at a new one in the store. most have a threaded pipe they screw into which is the water line. you will usually need a pipe wrench to undo them and wrap some cloth around it if you don't want to damage it. turn it counterclockwise when facing it

Sometimes the whole thing just screws off--you'll probably need a pipe wrench to do it.
