Politicians are politicians, so be skeptical no matter what. However, someone is going to win so it's better to join in and vote than to sit on the sidelines. As others have said, you basically have to shoot for the least worst. Look at the party that most closely represents you; DON'T hang your vote on just one issue, like abortion, or capital punishment or whatever. Look at the big picture.
Generally, Republicans think citizens can take care of themselves (financially) without federal input and they try to limit the amount of taxes forced on you. They think businesses are good to have because they provide jobs to all of us and therefore we all have more money to spend in our society and this promotes even more businesses and makes the world go round. Republicans do like there to be laws that maintain a certain minimum level of behavior and promote morals so that people aren't running around like animals. Also, Republicans are not very forgiving of people who are criminals (especially violent criminals) and they are usually much tougher on crime than democrats.
Democrats, on the other hand, would like everyone to be at the same level. They don't think it's fair if you are smarter than other people and work harder and make more money. They want to take your money from you and give it to the weaker, less hard-working people so that everyone is equal. They want the government to collect all the money and then dole it out as it sees fit (after taking out enough to keep the government people fat and happy). They don't care what you do to yourself or other people. They think all businesses are evil and yet they like them around so they can tax them, however their laws and taxes are the very things driving businesses away from the United States. They think the government knows best. They think criminals are all victims and can't help what they do so that we shouldn't punish them.

People should look at the issues not the person's party.
I am an Independent, which means that I do not vote a straight ticket from one party. I just vote for the issues and the right person for the job. Why do people not just vote for the right person for the job, It should not matter if he/she is a republican or a democrat. What matters are the issues

There is little difference between the two parties other than who gets to steal the bulk of my tax dollars. When the time comes, if we don't have a dictatorship by 2008, try to vote for the individual that seems like the lesser of the two evils that will be running.

Always remember, the lesser of two evils, is still evil.

The Democrats tend to be more liberal. For example alot of them are for some form of abortion, gay rights, affirmitive action, and things like that. Republicans tend to be the exact opposite. Both are usually rich though.

The basic difference is that Republicans follow a conservative philosophy and Democrats follow a liberal philosophy.

A liberal would say that a proper role for government is to regulate and oversee the economy. Liberals say it's proper for government to ensure that companies do the right thing (such as pay minimum wages), and to ensure that people act responsibly in their finances (such as requiring contributions to retirement savings).

A conservative would say that a proper role for government is to regulate and oversee morality. Conservatives say it's proper for government to ensure that people are punished for immoral acts (such as taking drugs), and that people act appropriately in their marriages (such as banning homosexual marriage).

A libertarian would say that neither of those is a proper role for government. Libertarians say that the only proper role is to maintain an army for defense against invasion, to maintain a court system for ensuring justice, and other constitutionally defined roles.

A populist would say that both economic and moral intervention are proper roles for government.

Some people classify libertarians as conservatives and some classify populists as liberals. Those definitions fall apart when libertarians talk about moral issues like abortion (pro-choice) or drugs (pro-legalization).

Ralph Nader and Pat Buchanan both consider themselves "populists," but the press usually classifies Nader as liberal and Buchanan as conservative. Yet they agree entirely on their most important issue, opposing free trade and globalization.

The problem with a one-dimensional definition like liberal and conservative is that it doesn't define well political reality. The two-dimensional definition is better.

There's a political quiz based on this way of looking at politics -- see http://www.issues2000.org/Quiz.htm
It explains the same as above and selects which presidential candidate matches your views on the issues based on that scheme.

the all around easiest way to look at democrats and republicans (because there is a lot to say about each one) is that democrats are more middle class-looking out for the middle man education / minimum wage and are usually accepting of everyone (gays, poor). republicans are big business looking out for taxes/ tax breaks and are more conservative. oh yeah. and democrats are far better then republicans.

Democrats are for the employees (Workers/Middle Class) and Republicans are for the Employers (Owners/Rich Folks) so you would vote for which best suits your lifestyle.
Good Luck thats a hard one.... for some.

noooooo.... you're so off in this one. we are no longer right here choosing sides using fact of a few clique. We (as republicans) know what's going to take place if the Dems get the capacity they are looking for. they'll make a large number in another united states that we like. We (US battling men and females persons) have laid our lives on the line to guard the way of existence that we like. we are no longer approximately to sit down and enable them to take it remote from us.
