Hello....

Small 2 or 3 charcter 'pictures' are called emoticons (a combination of the words emotion and icon) They are actually a small subset of a larger phenomenon called Ascii Art.

Before the days to dot matrix/inkjet/laser printers people used to make 'pictures' with characters overtyped on the paper. This is called ascii art (ascii being ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange), generally pronounced [ˈæski], is a character encoding based on the English alphabet. ASCII codes represent text in computers, communications equipment, and other devices that work with text.
