I had a smear over a year ago and I received a letter the other day asking me to go back for another since my last smear revealed there was some inflammtion. What does this mean? And shouldn't they have asked me to go back earlier than this?

Just to add:

I go every year for smears since I had abnormal cells back in 2001. I had biopsies done at the hospital. (Which was not painful nor was the anesthetic, just for those who may have to go for this) Everything was fine afterwards, just had some internal scarring. But I am beginning to worry about the length of time they took to call me back. I have my appointment tomorrow morning with the nurse.

That is truly odd... and verges on malpractice, if you ask me. Cervical inflammation is caused by a lot of things, mostly benign (it's a common side effect of the birth control pill). But there are more serious causes, and if your doctor was concerned, you should have had followup care well before now.

Don't worry too much. If your pap smear was abnormal they probably would phone you rather than writing, and would have had you back for follow-up care a long time ago, if only to get their hands on your sweet, sweet copays. This might be their way of getting you back in for your annual exam, but it is a much less respectful of your feelings than a friendly little, "It's been a year since your last pap! Call for an appointment" postcard. Let them know that you were upset or they will never learn.

First of all, know that this is just my best guess. :)

What sort of schedule have you been getting them on... yearly, or every three years? (Some people say every three years is safe as long as you've got three years in a row of normal smears in your record.)

Anyway, they might just be telling you to go back in this year, because they noted a condition that they wanted to monitor. Not something cancerous or pre-cancerous, maybe not even something considered "abnormal" enough to warrant further testing immediately. Maybe it's just something they want to check every year.

I would definitely say that if they were concerned, they would have contacted you immediately and requested you come back. That's what they SHOULD do, anyway... but... strange things happen sometimes; papers get lost, mail doesn't go through. Did you get a test confirmation back last year that told you your results? I've learned that it's a good idea to call anyway, any time you don't get test results, because doctor's offices can be notorious for "forgetting" things sometimes.

Anyway, sorry for the long rant; I'd just call them up and ask what's going on... normally the nurses can put you through to your doctor's voicemail, if nothing else.

Hope everything turns out okay.

I am surprised they didnt ask you back before but sometimes there are glitches in the system and maybe this happened with you.
Anyway, dont worry its probably nothing as many women are called back due to "abnormal cells" which are then found to be completely innocent.
Better to be safe than sorry though so get it checked and good luck.

Yeah they probably should've told you a lot sooner. They may have lost your paperwork or something until now and realized they needed you to come back in. I would schedule an appointment right away. Abnormal cells can lead to cervical cancer. You want to catch this as early as you possibly can.
