actually nothing to do with witchcraft ... most weekly rep co.s had Macbeth as a back up plan for a show that wasn't being well received. eg during a performance that was dieing on its feet cast members would mutter 'Macbeth' indicating the current show would be coming off and hurriedly replaced with the Scottish play till something else could be rehearsed

If my extensive background in classical theatre has taught me anything, it's that the only actors who waste their time (and everyone else's time!) with the "curse" are those who aren't good enough to actually be cast in the play.
