Usually when you are going somewhere, it is an unfamiliar place so you drive slower, check street signs, ask directions, make mistakes getting there, etc.

When you are returning home, you've already seen the whole route and have been home lots of times, so it should go much faster.

(It can also just be a psychological effect...)

Are you driving or flying? Going East to West or West to East? Driving makes no difference. Flying East to West is shorter than West to East because as you are traveling in one direction the Earth ia rotating in the other.

it feels longer when you don't know where you are,or where you are going...returning you have the knowledge to anticipate the trip
