For Windows XP
Begin by first clicking on the Start Button.
Then move your mouse over the All Programs icon to display all Start Menu folders.
If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, move your mouse over the Programs folder instead.
Now, move your mouse onto the Accessories menu folder until it expands.
Then move your mouse onto the System Tools menu folder until it expands.
Now Click on the Disk Defragmenter icon to launch the program.
Then use your mouse to highlight the drive that you want to Defragment?
Then click on the Defragment button located on the lower left hand center of the screen.
Windows XP will analyze your drive first and then display a visual estimate of the final results.
And Windows XP will continually show you a progress indicator bar depicting its progress.
When Windows is finished it will ask you if you would like to quit the Defrag Program.
Select YES to quit the Disk Defragmenter Program and then reboot your computer.

CHKDSK AND DEFRAG â
â
â WHILE RUNNING THE TWO FOLLOWING PROGRAMS YOU MUST CLOSE ALL YOUR OTHER WINDOWS. YOU CANNOT USE YOUR COMPUTER FOR ANYTHING ELSE WHILE DOING THE FOLLOWING OR YOU'LL RECEIVE ERROR MESSAGES.
â Before you can run the Defragmentation program on your computer's drives (hard drive, floppy, flash etc.) you have to make certain that your drives have no disk errors on them. Otherwise, the Defrag program will not be able to do it's job.
â In Windows you can use the CHKDSK utility to list and repair these errors. Below is a tutorial for running this utility. If this is too difficult for you then you will need to get someone else to do it for you. Maybe there is a local computer club that can help you with it. If not then you'll need to take it to a certified computer technician. Don't take it your cousin or uncle to save a few dollars. They might cause you more problems than they will save you.
â http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx?mfr=true
â To open CHKDSK click on the START BUTTON > RUN > type in chkdsk /f and click on OK. The /f tells chkdsk to fix all errors. Without that chkdsk will only show you the errors.
â Once you have fixed all the errors it is time to run the Defrag Utility. This is the easy part. To run the Defrag Utility click on the Start Button > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Defragmenter
â TIP: In Windows versions before XP you have a utilty called ScanDisk. This old relic isn't included in Windows XP. It removed errors on your hard drive but would take more than 24 hours to work on large hard drives like we have today.

Windows XP does not include a nice defragmenter utility, so you have to open a command shell. Start > Run type CMD and press Enter. In the balck window that appears type DEFRAG -f and presss Enter. This will defragment the entire hard drive even if you are low on free space. The next best things to do is create a scheduled task to run defrag regularly. Here is a great article from Microsoft that explains all of this ad nauseum

You may want to use Diskeeper Lite, it is a free HD defraging program, it has less features than the full retail version, but it is free. You can download it from: www.diskeeper.com
