I sold an item on ebay on Saturday, and I shipped it out to him, USPS-Parcel Post, on Tuesday. Now he is emailing me about the tracking number.

Do you buy a tracking number? We never agreed, and nowhere on the auction did I say anything about tracking, but since this is my first sale, I don't know what to do. I shipped it without buying anything else (apart from bubble wrap and the box.) Where do I get the tracking number? Does the package even have one? Are you supposed to pay extra for it? If my package doesn't have a tracking number, then what information can I give him so he knows I sent it? Please help, since he wants a response by the end of today, it's pretty urgent.

Since you didn't pay for delivery confirmation to get a tracking number, you can scan your USPS receipt and email it to him as proof (remember to circle his line item). Just say its your first time and you didn't know. Be nice, he will understand.

USPS parcel post does not have tracking numbers, however if you paid additional for it, you could've gotten Confirmation of Delivery. This is almost like a tracking number, in that you'll know when the buyer received the package. However, unlike a UPS or FedEx tracking number, you cannot watch the package as it passes through various stages of the transit.

I would recommend always purchasing a Confirmation of Delivery. It only costs an extra 45 cents and then you have proof of your buyer receiving the item. This will be useful should you ever encounter a buyer who actually received the item, but wants to lie about not receiving it so as to gain a refund of his money.

You don't get a tracking number w/ parcel post. You'd have to use one of the more expensive options, like Priority Mail to get the tracking number. Just tell your buyer that it was sent parcel post and that you don't have one. Ask him to be patient before leaving any negative feedback. As it is your first sale, I would think they'd be willing to work w/ you a bit.

I'm sure that if you look on usps.com, you can get an estimate of how long it will take.

When you sent the package, didn't you write out a little slip where you put the address, etc? The slip should have a barcode that you can email to/give your customer so they can search on the USPS website for the location of their package. Don't freak out, if you can't find it, just tell your buyer that it's your first transaction and that if it doesn't arrive in a few days he can contact you or give you an "Unreceived Item Strike" or whatever they're called. Hope this helps!

If you print your own labels at www.usps.gov, they give you a tracking number for free. Otherwise, you have to pay extra for it at the post office. If you didn't request it, you didn't get it. Just let him know he should receive it in a few days. In the future, it's wise to get the tracking number, this way the buyer can't argue that they never received the package.

That's not genuine. The English isn't good enough and Paypal wouldnt send you a long email starting with 'dear' plus all those capital letters, it just seems wrong, report the buyer. Lucky you asked on here instead of sending the item ! I hope you dont get a scammer again :(

Look at your USPS receipt. It should have a longish number by the barcode, or it will say "tracking #:" and then list a number. If you don't have the receipt, or copy of the waybill you don't have a tracking number. Sorry.
