You will have colostrum before the baby is born. This is the yellowish, thick, sticky first food that is super-packed with nutrients and immunities for baby. It's like their first immunization. It comes in small quantities, but that's all baby needs since his tummy is the size of his fist.

About 3-5 days after the birth, mom's milk will "come in" and she will probably experience engorgement and lots of breastmilk will begin to flow. After this, the milk production machine switches over from hormonal control to being controled by supply and demand. The more baby nurses, the more milk mom will make.

It shouldn't be a matter of weeks till your milk comes in but rather a matter of days. For most women they can count on the milk coming in by the fifth day and many can expect it sooner. For all of my four children my milk came in on the third day. Previous to this day I had colostrum, which leaked during the second half of my pregnancy when my breast were pressed on.

Typically, for the first 1-3 days you have what is called colostrum. This is very important to the newborn as it helps to boost it immunity and protect it from illness. After those first few days the body starts producing milk. So it is usually only days not weeks before you get breastmilk.

My milk came in about 2 days after I had my baby. I didn't really have any milk come out before then.

Breast milk does not come in until after you have given birth... and it usually comes in within a day or two, as long as you keep getting your baby to suckle... this helps prompt the milk to come out.

Your body starts making milk about 2 days after you have the baby...some women can squeeze stuff out (which is dumb) during pregnancy, but most don't.
