You should look into buying a HE (high efficiency) front loader machine. When I bought mine, the model was eligible for rebates from both my local water company and PG&E.
If you are looking for a reasonably priced, reliable front loader, I'd recommend Kenmore. As for higher end brands, I'd recommend Bosch. High effiency front loaders use less water, less energy and less laundry detergent. I love mine, and I've owned it for over a year.

Go to at least two different stores that offer washing machines from different brands. Ask them to provide you with information about multiple machines. The provided information should include:
* prize
* water usage
* energy usage
* size of maximum possible load
* wash programs available
* temperature choices available, including how the temparatures are reached - be careful if the machine cannot heat water, this means it relies fully on the water temperature of your water heater and flushing the toilet while the washing machine gets its water can change the temperature of that water significantly.
* delivery and installation service
* removal of old machine
I prefer front loaders. They use significantly less water and the water is pushed through the laundry, while in top loaders the laundry just swims in the water, being moved by the actuator.
My personal favorite brand is Miele, but they are extremely expensive - so most probably not yet something for you.

We like our Frigidaire front loader water saver because it's simple, inexpensive and does the job.
The GE water saver has good ratings but I have had no personal experience with it.
We had an expensive Neptune by Maytag before this which did not impress us because problem with the door latch & computer which was too soon for a new machine. We dumped it after less than 3 yrs. My brother bought the water efficient Kenmore front loader and he has had no trouble with it going on 4 yrs. He likes it but it was more expensive than our Maytag Neptune.
When you shop for one, ask if they will remove your old one for nothing. With some stores, you have to make arrangements with the deliverymen or pay more to have old one removed. If they charge, ask "How much?"

I have a Fridgedaire Front Loading HighEff. Machine. It uses a very small amount of water and works beautifully. Man.. that really sucks when an appliance breaks down, I've been there.

all I can say go to the better one, even though it will be more expensive. I got a roper one, and it shakes and rattles and I just got it, my old one did the same, because I want to always do big loads, but I can't because of that freaking washer. get an expensive washer and a cheap a $ $ dryer!
