I have a question

I have a small, 6-channel mixer for recording my drums. My problem is that I have 4 dynamic drum mics (for the snare, bass, and toms) and then two condenser mics for the cymbals. The condensers, as I am told, run off the mic preamp-phantom power in the mixer. But I am also told that the phantom power can damage the dynamic mics.

How can I turn the phantom power on for just the channels that the condensers are on?

Depending on the limitations of your mixer, you probably cannot choose the individual channels to add phantom. That being said, dynamic micrphones usually are unaffected by phantom power. Ribbon mics, on the other hand are much more fragile and should never be subjected to phantom power, but dynamic mics are usually pretty safe. You may notice some change in volume/tone.

If you are still concerned about adding phantom power to your dynamics, there are several options for dedicated phantom power units. These can found on sweetwater.com or a thorough seach on ebay may lend some results.

All in all, i wouldn't worry too much about the extra 48v damaging your dynamics.
