You actually may be over-washing. Try washing your face just in the morning and then at night before bed. You need to make sure your moisturizer is not oily or even oil based. I started using Bare Essentials/Bare Minerals make-up and since it's a powder I don't get the oily patches like I used to.

As many folks have stated, washing a lot can actually just create more oil. Cut back on the washing. When you do wash use a very gentle, non stripping cleanser like Cetaphil. You can get that at any Longs or Rite Aide. Also use Witch Hazel as a toner. It's a good astringent. Just twice a day though. No more than that.

Invest in a good moisturizer. Aveda - a very expensive beauty line has come out with a great moisturizer for oil control. Their acne line. Sure, $38 is expensive, but it works and a little goes a very long way.

I also highly recommend the Bare Minerals line that everyone is talking about. The stuff lasts ALL day! You should be able to find it near you.

I have had horribly oily skin ever since I started puberty, so I've struggled with oily skin from middle school on through college. This is what I've discovered works best for me: powder foundation (I use Bare Minerals), then use a paintbrush to put on cover up (the kind that comes in a tube like toothpaste, I've mixed a few together in a container to get the right color), and then Corn Silk translucent No Color powder on top to set it. This way, the cover up is the only "wet" thing you put on.

Bare Minerals is the only powder type foundation that I've tried, but I might try some others that are less expensive. I only use cover-up because I have very bad acne, which I've had since beginning puberty, and the foundation isn't quite good enough, though it's the BEST covering foundation I've ever tried. I really like how the Bare Minerals foundation feels on my face, it doesn't feel like I'm wearing a mask, I feel like I can move my face however I want, and not be afraid of cracking or otherwise messing up my makeup.

I used liquid foundation, lots of different kinds, for a long time. I always had the problem of it melting off my face. I don't have that problem with the powder foundation. If my face gets a little shiny, or it smudges a bit, I can just use a dry finger to kinda dab at it, and it fixes it up with no problems. When I used liquid foundation, I was so afraid to touch my face, because I never knew if it would all just come off.

I've tried blotting papers, and that works well with the powder foundation, but not so well with liquid foundation, because it can just lift the liquid foundation right off.

A key thing for using Bare Minerals is to use the right brush. I use the Baby Buki Brush, and really get the makeup into my pores. That's the key to getting good coverage.

The Corn Silk powder is wonderful. I've been using it for years and years. It really gives you an airbrushed finish.

My mom keeps telling me that I should be grateful for my oily skin, because when I get older, I won't have wrinkles, because my skin will still be moist...but I say that I'd rather have wrinkles when I'm older and it's alright to have wrinkles, than have oily skin and horrible acne now, when most people have nice skin.

I hope I don't sound too much like an advertisement, this is just what's worked for me.

Good luck! I wish you the best, from one oily girl to another!

Washing your face too much will make for more oil production. Wash it 2 times a day.
Little rice paper blotters are a great way to absorb extra oil on the face. Most beauty stores sell em and they fit inside a makeup bag.
The best make up I have found so far that does not get oily and melty is Bare Minerals.
Also ProActive makes a fantastic lotion for the face that absorbs oil through out the day. ProActive also has a great line of foundations that are not oily and have ingredients that do not clog pores. Stay away from cheap drug store makeup, like Wet n Wild and NYC.

I had the same problem for so long. Here's what my dermatologist told me. First use Cetaphil soap (it's really gentle, dermatologist approved and oil free). Also, use a light, oil free moisturiser (again, I recommend Cetaphil). If you're skin is too dry it can produce excess moisture to compensate, so your goal is to keep a balance. Also, your foundation should be oil free (my dermatologis recommends Clinique and I've been happy with it for over a year). Apply your foundation with a brush, and only use powder if you NEED it. The more stuff you put on your face, the more oily it will be. Really, all you need is foundation, blush, eyeshadow and some gloss. Oh, and there are some ways to control the shine while you're at school. I know it sounds wierd, but toilet seat covers are a great blotter. Don't waste your money on the papers they sell in stores, it's just the same thing but they charge you money. Just use the cover to blot your entire face, this should get rid of any oil. Do this as often as you feel neccesary, and keep a small makeup bag with your essentails to reapply if you feel it's necessary. That way if your eyeliner is caking or you feel like your blush is fading, you can just reapply.
Hope this helps, good luck!

DO NOT USE POWDER on top of make-up to control your shine.... The oil from your skin will only absorb the powder -- leaving you looking cakey and discolored more and more each time you do this.... Also you will be clogging your pores...causing acne and other damage to your skin.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND.... Mary Kay Products - They are safe for sensitive skins, not tested on animals and for the past 13 years have been voted as THE #1 SKINCARE LINE in North America. - - plus they have a 100% money back guarantee.

This is what you need.... If you are a Teen and not concerned with "aging" yet... Use the VELOCITY CLEANSER. If you are 20 or older use the 3-in-1 Cleanser for Combo/Oily Skin.

Then... Use the "OIL MATTIFIER".... it is a lightweight cream that you put on wherever you get oily (could be all over - or just your T-zone) -- this stuff is amazing... soaks up over double it's weight in oil --so basically you are oil-free all day!

Use the MEDIUM COVERAGE FOUNDATION.... This stuff is actually a "protection" for your skin -- and not only is it GOOD for your skin... it gives a smooth flawless finish to your face while CONTROLING oil for the entire day. It is so natural that you cannot even tell you have anything on your face... and it doesn't rub off on your clothes or pillow case, etc.

Then if you still get oily (which is highly unlikely) get the BEAUTY BLOTTERS..... unlike other "tissue paper" products, these are made of LINEN... and soak up oil without removing even a hint of make-up.

And since I am not selling this stuff to you..... I am not making any money by telling you all this.... So just try these items... You have nothing to lose because all Mary Kay items have a money back guarantee -- you can return them at any time and for any reason.

By washing your face continuously, you are actually causing more oil production because you are overdrying your skin and your glands are working overtime to produce enough oil to keep your face from being too dry.
The best OTC product for washing your face is Neutrogena acne wash. Follow up with plain ol' witch hazel for a toner and moisturize with a little bit of tea tree oil (which can be purchased at most health foods stores) or coconut oil. I know, oil on an oily face sounds counterproductive, but as someone who has dealt with oily skin for the better part of 15 years of my life, trust me when I say this works. It'll take about a week but you won't notice many breakouts (if any) and your skin will look smoother and healthier than ever!

Also, make sure that your makeup is noncomedogenic -- if it doesn't say so on the label, it is not. You should ALWAYS use noncomedogenic makeup to prevent your pores from being clogged. To freshen your makeup throughout the day, use skin blotting papers that are sold in the makeup department of all major department. The best brand is Burt's Bees.

Best wishes! :)

Washing your face a lot makes it more oily.

Because you are washing away the oils, your face will think its dry, and will just produce more oil.

What you need to do is wash your face at least before you go to bed (to get all the makeup off), and maybe in the mornings as well, before you put your makup on for the day. And wash it with cleanser, and not soap.

Try using a water based foundation. This will allow your skin to breath and won't look greasy either.

During the day, blot any oil with blotting paper, and carry a compact and dust with translucent powder if you start looking shiny. If you play sport during the day, when you finish and get changed, wash your face and then reapply makeup.

With your "beauty routine", it should be : cleanse, tone and moisturise.

Even products available at the supermarket are good to use, you don't have to spend a lot of money. I would stay away from cleansing milks - they clogged my skin. There are products there for younger skin as well. Just have a look when you next go to the store. If you are not already doing this, it will take about two weeks at least for your skin to adjust, so during this time, your skin will be very greasy and you may get some pimples. But stick it out, and your skin will adjust.

Hiya,

Firstly, when washing, use a gentle cleaner - and don't wash more then morning and evening. They even sell "mattifying cleansers". Secondly, regarding makeup, what kind you use makes a big big difference. Certain makeup formula's 'sweat' and therefore get shiny - and make you look like you have oily skin. But you really aren't 'oily'. Its simply melted makup.

I recently discovered "Mineral Foundation". This kind of makup is actually healthy. Its natural minerals crushed so pure and fine, that its almost like dust. With a simple "kabuki Brush" you brush this makeup onto your face and in 5 minutes you have a flawless face. Not only is it not harmful, but its actually 'helpful' to your skin. The minerals have beneficial properties.

So if you use mineral makup, you'll usually brush on some foundation, and perhaps a bit of "rice powder". That all helps set and absorb anything that may form later on. Since mineral makeup is so Light and Airy, it doesn't block up your pores and it won't 'melt'.

I got my makeup from http://www.everydayminerals.com as I've found their stuff to be great, and cheap. You can order a sample kit from their site.

Lastly, for touchups and or shiny emergencies, there are these really cool 'blue sheets' that you dab onto the face and it absorbs shine. Its not a powder that blots. Its a special absorbent cloth. Its called "& Clear Instant Oil-Absorbing Sheets". Comes in a handypack of 50 that can fit in a purse or anywhere. You can buy them for like $4 a package, or you can purchase them on ebay for alot less.

This is an absolute must have.

So lets just go over the routine. You wash in the morning and evening. You apply mineral foundation which is light and airy and sweatproof. You use these blue clean and clear sheets in an emergency.

You will have a smooth flawless complexion and everyone will be jealous :)

Washing your face a lot when you have oily skin only makes it oilier. Crazy as that sounds. I would suggest using a mild face wash followed by a mild toner and then a moisturizer in the morning. I would do the same in the evening. Use a oil free based foundation as well as powder. I would blot during the day with those oil blotting tissues. Clinique is a good line to use and Mary Kay also has a line called Velocity that works great for some people. A little constellation is that when you have oily skin you are less prone to getting wrinkles when you are older. Good Luck! I have been dealing with this all of my life.
