First, get a coach or someone who can teach you teh basics of tennis, and then all that's left is to practice, practice practice, and then begin playing tournaments. Tournaments are the key to gaining experience and perfecting your skills.

To become better there are many thing you can do. Running is truly a big part of tennis even thought it might seem otherwise. It keeps you in shape for all those challenging matches. When playing always strategies in your head, be ready to place the ball away from your opponent. Always practice, even on those gloomy or really hot days. If you don't have anyone to practice with you can always bring out a basket of balls on to the court and practice your serves. If there is a wall right near your court, you can practice your volleys.

During the winter, when I couldn't play as there were no indoor courts in my area, I watched tennis and analyzed how the pros hit their shots. I also did quite a bit of "shadow" hitting, just like shadow boxing. I improved my serve by going out on the court with a basket of balls and just repeatedly serving. I also had a coach who examined my game and gave me some important pointers (reach for the ball when you serve, don't wait for the ball to come to you, etc.) Stick with it and you will begin getting better and better. All of us have "off days", so just stick it out and you will not regret it. Just make sure you are learning to hit with the proper technique (there are several sites online that show the proper technique) because if you are hitting improperly, it will be hard for you to get rid of your bad habits.

Good luck!

Do a lot of drills. Don't just hit forehands , hit forehands crosscourt and then practice it down the line. Then have you partner hit you short ones so that you have to move in and put it the ball away.
So , my point is that when you go out to practice just do not hit balls, do specific things for specific shots to make them better. You can buy books that are filled with great drills at any book store, or just ask your coach for some.
