My family always argues about this. I don't think it matter that much but what do you do??????????????? ( I usually point them up, except for the knives.) :)

I point the knives down for saftey, and the rest up so they can benefit from more space in the wash.
( all the things at the bottom of the basket are held close together, whereas there is more open when they are working end up)

I find I have less residue when I do it that way.
but really, I don't think its a matter to fight over,,,
I'd just let whoever unloads it have their way.

I point all the silver ware up...even the knives. That way the part that was in your mouth and should be the messiest is sure to be cleaned. If you point them down...do you know that your basket is totally sterile?

When I empty the dish washer I am just careful at taking out the knives...but I know they aren't down in the basket that might have stagnant water in it.

Hope that makes sense.

I'm with you. The only ones I point down are the knives. I don't want to stab myself when I go in to take them out. Knives down, everything else up.

silver should point up - that way the water drops off the bottom of the utensil and doesnt collect any residue where you put your mouth.

knives - should point down for obvious safety reasons.

if this is the only thing ya'll argue about then you are doing pretty good!

I like to point mine down. That way I don't touch the part that goes into the mouth with my hands.

You should alternate your silverware, one up one down and countinue the pattern till all of your silverware is placed in the dishwasher.
