It is an important story because after Beowulf goes to hunt down & attack Grendel (to defend & protect the Danes), he gradually learns the troll was wronged by the Danes as a child. Lots of current wars are going on from conflicts about stuff that is so old, no one really knows the reason, they just fight.
In Beowulfs case he learned the beginning of the story and things were not fair to Grendel.

The movie Beowulf & Grendel with Gerard Butler as Beowulf, is available at walmart for about $15 - all teenagers should watch it.

My impression when I was in school was that it was long, boring, & difficult to follow. I don't think that this is what you're asking, though, is it? ;-) Would you consider expanding your question with details?

I don't know. What are yours? I do not think I want to do your homework for you. Have you read the story? It's very interesting.
