I thought that perhaps brown is a mix of black and yellow but I just wanted to know for sure.

"Brown" is usually achieved by mixing colors that are "complimentary" to one another

orange and blue
red and green
yellow and violet

Then lighten or darken the brown with black or white.

Paint-wise, brown is a mixture of red, blue, and yellow. Depending on the amount of each color put into the mixture, the brown may be warmer or colder. Using Photoshop of some other computer imaging software, brown is a dark yellow.

Either a mix of the primary colors (red, blue, yellow) or a mix of the secondary colors (green, purple, and orange). Any other combinations will be gray, not brown. :)
