Why don't you reverse the question:
why do some people decide to marry?
then take your answers and just realize that they don't apply to everybody. There you have it. No reason to get married.

They may be like me. I'm 45 and never married. My reasoning was simp[le when I was younger. I was a professional musician and felt that it wouldn't be fair to put career first. I no longer play, but now the dating field is far different. I'm in my 40's and have limited choice. Most are divorced after two failed marriages, with 2-3 children, routinely teenagers. Plus, I really enjoy the freedom I've had and would be difficult for me to give up. Am I happy? Not always. Are married people happy? Not always. The thing I hate most is the idea of growing old and being alone. That's the one thing that makes me continue to search for a companion.

They are usually independent, open-minded, intelligent, wise, worldly and understand that some of the best relationships come from making a daily choice to be with someone vs. a marriage situation, which can equate to having achieved the goal and thus the effort fades and the relationship becomes taken for granted. Some of the best people I know are in LTR's and don't feel the need to adopt man-made institutions and society's rules. Without judgment, nothing against those that enjoy a great marriage either. Whatever works.

I agree with "thelost..." how come so many married people on here are just trying to convince us all how "happy" they are....whateverf....but THEN you read all the cheating and 3somes and yada yada questions and its really ridiculous....60% of marriages END IN DIVORCE...don't tell me EVERY couple is so freaking happy......because more than half of you obviously are not! And also, the slighting nasty remarks about "shacking up"...two people DON'T HAVE TO MARRY IF THEY DO NOT WANT TO!!!" THATS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! Most married people are just bitter they just didn't "shack up"......that way they could easily pick up and leave when their partner turned into a cheating liar!!!!!

It is far more financially economic to live with someone without getting married. The people that choose this are either constantly trying to convince other people that they are happy with their situation and in reality they hate their lives or they are very happy with the situation because they are not really committed and so just don't care.

It's been my experience that these people are secure within themselves, they're generally very independent, self-sufficient, don't need anyone to 'stroke their ego', probably a bit selfish, and the ones I know are happy being alone. It's all about them--which I guess they're entitled to be that way. I know lots of older people that never married--some have never dated and others have dated everyone in town (so to speak). Being attracted to a never married person can be frustrating, because they don't need anyone.

I am married, but have friends who have chosen to stay single. The don't want kids, they don't want to answer to anyone but themselves.
They are polite, considerate, interesting people, but have chosen not to be in long term commited relationships.

With marriage you have to take vows and stick to them, you have to commit to one another and it is much harder to do then just shack up with one another. And if there is a divorce from a marriage, the possessions are split, shacking up, you can walk out anytime and take your own possessions and leave!

In my faith it is a commandment to marry, and multiply and replenish the earth. Marriage is ordained of God.
IMO people who have no desire to marry are usually selfish.
