I'm planning to transfer to a new school for Fall 2007. I went to U of Arizona last year and received a 3.1 GPA. I could have done better, but my mom and grandpa were ill so I was flying back to Ohio frequently and missed a lot of school. I'm attending community college in Ohio this quarter, and will be getting about a 3.7 while taking 20 credits (10 of which are foreign language). Next quarter I should be attending Ohio State, and will be taking two foreign languages (Arabic and Persian) as well as some history and political science classes. I was a Near Eastern Studies major at Uof Arizona, and am planning to continue that field wherever I go. My language skills are: French (Int), German(Beg.), Hebrew(Int), Arabic(Beg.), and Persian (Int). I received 3s on four APs, and my SAT scores were 1250. I have done many extracurriculars, both in high school and in college. The schools I'd like to go to are:
NYU
Fordham
Columbia
U Maryland

Do I stand a chance of getting into any of those?

Also, are there any other schools I should consider?

My grandpa and mom died, and pretty much my entire family has moved, so there's no reason for me to be in Ohio.

I can only tell you about my past experience... which has led me to believe that there is no university one cannot get into. The key is patience and not necessarily depending upon the standard system of entry.

By which I mean, go ahead and apply and see if you get in through the front door. If you don't get accepted, then decide where you desire to attend and move there. Take a part-time job and then take one or two courses under whatever policy allows this. It might mean weekends or night classes. All universities usually allow locals to take some classes. Try to take them in your area of interest if possible.

The key is to get great grades in these classes and to endear yourself to pertinent professors and department heads. These are the people who will recognize your potential and go to bat for you. Department heads are particularly useful as all they have to do is wave their magic pens, and you are in.

If for some reason you cannot get into the department of choice, find another department where you can smooze yourself into the door. Once accepted into the university one is usually able to 'change one's mind' and change departments and degree programs.

Using this system my friends and I have been able to get into a number of colleges that wouldn't have us based on SAT's or some other criteria.

Hope this helps.

The average GPA to columbia and NYU is 3.5 but it all depends on the interview. I'm not sure about Fordham and U Maryland. Hey, try their website. Good luck!

you might have a shot at getting into those schools but how about just attending the university of ohio state that way you can go to school and still be close by to take care of and help your mom and grandfather

Fordham and Maryland? Yes.

Columbia or NYU -- these won't be easy.
