My 6th grade son has this fraction problem he needs help with. I have to be honest when I say I have always been horrible with Math aside from the basics. Can someone help me to help him?

If a class collects $155 toward a fundraising goal of $775, what fraction represents the class's progress toward its goal?

$155/775 = 1/5th, which is also 0.2 or 20%

(because 155 goes into 775 exactly 5 times, you can divide both the top/numerator and the bottom/denominator of the fraction by 155 and reduce it to 1/5)

it is 155/775, which you then simplify by removing all common factors of each number:

155 = 31 * 5, and
775 = 155 * 5, and the 155 as we have just seen is 31 * 5, so:
775 = 31 * 5 * 5

This means that our fraction of 155 over 775 can be factored as follows:

31 * 5
------------
31 * 5 * 5

the 31's and the first 5's cancel out, leaving

1
---
5

as the final simplified fraction.

However, if the assignment does not say to "simplify fractions" or "express in simplest terms" or something to that effect, then technically the first fraction (155 over 775) is the correct way to express this problem since it is more clear WHERE the result came from. But if it is part of an algebra type problem, the simplified form is more correct because in algebra the result is then likely to be plugged into the next formula, and you want the smallest numbers possible in that case in order to keep things more manageable.

The fraction is the part over the whole.

155/775 = 1/5

The answer is 1/5

If you take the 775 and divide it by 155, then you get 5

total (775)
---------------------- = 5
current principle (155)

The five shows how many "155s" will go into 775

Since there is only one "155," it would be 1/5

Sorry, but this is very hard to explain over the internet.

Good luck, let me know if I can be of any more assistance

Just divide 155 by 775 -- you could say 1 out of 5, or 2 out of ten...

Since 155 * 5 = 775, the best way to say it would be to say they're one-fifth the way there.
