From Ohio State University:

"The first two, the gray squirrel and the fox squirrel, sleep at night in dens and drays. A den, usually a hole in a tree, is typically used in winter. The hole is lined with comfy stuff like moss and fur and feathers. Ahhh.

A dray is a nest of leaves and twigs, the size of a basketball, built in a tree?s upper branches. Summer drays may be just a platform. Winter drays are warm and waterproof.

Red squirrels, for their part, sleep in dens and drays as well. But their den may be in a hole in a tree or even a log on the ground."

Also, you may not be able to see the holes because they may be too far up the tree, or in a crotch you can't see from the ground.

Hope this helps!

they make nests in the trees with leaves and debris when winter comes and the trees thin out you can see the nests I have watched them go in at night and come out in the morning but you have to be up at the crack of dawn to see them leaving
