A. Spontaneous generation

It was thought that life "sprung up" under certain conditions. Maggots were thought to emerge from old meat and so Pasteur put meat in a jar and covered it and left a piece out. The piece in the covered jar contained no maggots and the one that was left out did. Thus the theory of spontaneous generation was disproved.
