I guess it'd depend on in I lived in the North or the South. Personally I'd rather have lived in the South during the pre-Civil War, but I'm against slavery. Hmm I guess I'm neutral then.

"A great majority of the people being poor had no interest in slavery, present or prospective. But most of them had little mountain homes, and be it ever so humble, there is no place like home...but when the Federal army occupied East Tennessee and threatened North Carolina..." Lt. Col. William W. Stringfield: Histories of the Several Regiments and Battalions from North Carolina in the Great War 1861-'65, Vol., 3, p. 734.
A Southerners view on "Why many southerners fought in the American Civil War."
I believe it was a pretty good answer. Since my relatives resided in the South, I would have joined them.

I live in California, so I know the dangers of regionalism. We are one people, under law. I would be for the Union; then and now.

I would've been in the 3rd Virginia Regiment, of Kemper's Brigade, of Pickett's Division, of Longstreet's 1st Corps.... staring belly-up on the gentle slopes of Cemetery Ridge....within reach of the copse of trees and stone fence....Rats!!!. I didn't make it.
