I had the EGR valve cleaned and replaced by the mechanic but the Check Engine light came back on. He says that the code indicates the problem is the valve so he is now saying that my computer could be sending the wrong error code. Could that be true or is he lying?

PLEASE do NOT take it back to him. He needs a course in vehicle diagnostics!!!

Your computer IS sending the correct code, but just because it says it's the egr doesn't mean that something else is wrong. A vaccum leak, faulty MAP sensor, etc. commonly sends an egr code when in fact the egr is perfectly fine.

I'm certified in vehicle diagnostic strategies and I belive you should take it somewhere else that has ASE certified technicians.

If you have a 91-94 tercel, try resetting the computer. You can do this by either disconnecting the battery or removing the EFI 15A fuse in the engine bay fuse block for 20 seconds. Then drive the car. If the check engine light comes back on, you can be sure that it is recording all the newest errors. All you need to do then is 1) use a paperclip or piece of wire to connect terminals TE1 and E1 in the diagnosis box (a little grey box either next to the engine bay fuse box on 91-92 tercels, or on the firewall next to the ignitor on 93-94 tercels). Turn your car to ON, DO NOT START, and count the check engine light blinks. It runs a series of on-off-on-off, pause, on-off... patterns. I believe the EGR will give you a code 71.

I had a similar problem with a car, I took it to a second mechanic and found out that the prior technician had cut the wire and that forced the light to stay on... it had to be intentionality cut due to is awkwardly location, it took some effort to cut. This may not be the case with you but look for a second opinion.

NATE has it dead on. Take your little car to a REPUTABLE repair facility, and look for the ASE shingle. After he PROPERLY repairs the ar, take the receipt for the repair, and go back to the first shop, and get your money returned.

Good Luck

You can go to an auto parts store and they can read the computer codes to tell you what's wrong. To clean the inside of the engine, change the oil.
