Someone who sends money. I see this on postal money orders -- the person who sends the money (pays for the money order) is the remitter.

Also on bills, you sometimes see something like: "Please remit payment by Oct. 31, 2006." I think it's an awkward word, but it has a more specific meaning than "sender" or "send" so I guess the lawyer types like it.
