After all, they are out to protect our bill of rights. Do you honestly need more evidence that the ACLU is partisan?

the first poster: Think about how liberally the 1st amendment is interpreted. Now think about how the 2nd amendment is interpreted.

Now try again. Saying that there are few restrictions on gun ownership is the stupidest thing i've heard all day.

From the ACLU website:
The national ACLU is neutral on the issue of gun control. We believe that the Constitution contains no barriers to reasonable regulations of gun ownership. If we can license and register cars, we can license and register guns.

Most opponents of gun control concede that the Second Amendment certainly does not guarantee an individual's right to own bazookas, missiles or nuclear warheads. Yet these, like rifles, pistols and even submachine guns, are arms.

The question therefore is not whether to restrict arms ownership, but how much to restrict it. If that is a question left open by the Constitution, then it is a question for Congress to decide.

So...
The ACLU will not "stand up for the 2nd Amendment" until the term "arms" is better defined by Congress.

Besides, the 2nd Amendment already has a champion, the NRA.

Do you even know what ACLU is an acronym for? Owning a gun is not a CIVIL LIBERTY, and as the first poster has already said, there are other groups who focus on the second amendment (the ACLU tends to focus on the first).

By your way of thinking, I can call the NRA an equally partisan organization.

Grow up. Read a paper and come back when you're better informed.

dapixelator: You goofball, gun rights ARE a "civil liberty"

The fact of the matter is the ACLU are huge hypocrites. They claim to care about civil rights, but they forgot to tell you, they only pick and choose the rights that they approve of personally.

The NRA is the nation's oldest civil rights organization. If the ACLU did it's job, there would be no need for the NRA.

That's not what they are about-- they focus on civil liberties. Correction-- specific areas of the constitution-- you people happy with that now? Sheesh... grow up.

We've got the NRA and a whole host of other groups to protect the 2nd amendment. And that one is rarely infringed.

The mission of the ACLU is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees:

Your First Amendment rights-freedom of speech, association and assembly. Freedom of the press, and freedom of religion supported by the strict separation of church and state.

Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.

Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.

Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

You may not like all their tactics or cases they take but how can one who believes in the constitution NOT agree with the mission? Its unamerican not to fight for the freedoms in the constituion -- all them 2nd amendment too.

to the person below me->
Questioned is not the same as violated. You can own pretty much any weapon you want w/in reason. And there has to be reasonable limits on weapons ownership--- Can I own a fucntioning howitzer or abrams tank?

Look, as I said, you can own pretty much any weapon you want. It is such a big deal to register your handgun? You have to register you car and get a license to drive?

Restrictions? I can walk into ANY gun swap meet and buy pretty much any handgun or rifle I want. I can buy guns from guys in the paper. Give me a break.

let's face it. the ACLU is extremely partisan. the founder even admittted himself that their goal is a communist takeover of america. why else do you think they are viciously anti christian?

leftists and liberals hate gun ownership because it provides average citizens with a way to defend themselves. armed citizenry is alot harder to take over than unarmed.

our founding fathers gave us this right for that exact reason. they knew governments can go corrupt and they didn't want future american generations to become oppressed by dictatorships or totalitarian governments.

The ACLU has its own agenda and cannot be bothered with anything that is not in the forefront of controversy. YES they are partisan, big time.

Well, since they call themselves the American Civil Liberties Union, and I'm an American and they do not in any way shape or form represent my liberties, I call them a sham.
