Off camera, what is David Letterman really like?

I hear that David Letterman is a recluse. I would like to hear from someone who has worked on his show regarding what he's really like. Sometimes when I watch the show it seems like his staff members are afraid of him and they tiptoe around him, being careful not to make him upset.

watch him every night and yes he does seem like a bully, and think at times he like to degrade the little store owner and that girl that works for him, but still like him

Well, I wouldn't really know because he's off the camera, but probably fake on live, and probably all mean and stuff off the camera.
