Fear. They are afraid of financial fall out, afraid of what what will happen to the kids, afraid of being alone, afraid of what the other spouse will do to them if they try to leave, afraid of 'getting back out there', afraid of what people will say and think about them.

People spent as much time working on their marriages as they did fearing what would happen if they ended it, maybe they wouldn't be so miserable!

They are scared of being alone. Sometimes there is a lack of self esteem, a fear that they will not know how to be by themself. They may feel weak. But I have found that when I had the courage to get up and leave, I have felt so empowered, and even avoided the situation again in the future. BUT if there is no infidelity, then the spouses need to stop being sooooo self centered. Hope that helps.

Some people would rather be miserable then be alone. It is sad!

If it is a woman, she is most likely afraid or incapable of taking care of herself so she stays because she has made herself dependent on her husband.

If it is a man, they usually will stay for the kids and just get some action on the side.

In a word, "inertia".

It takes energy to dissolve a relationship.
