i dont really think the federal government is doing a good job on decreasing the homeless population we have in the USA, i think that the problem should be left to the state governments because this problem will be handled more efficiently, anyone else agree with me?

Believe it or not, there are many homeless people out there because they choose to be. It is easier living hand to mouth than working for a living. Until the fraudulent ones are weeded out there is nothing that we can do to solve the problem.

Why are they homeless? Just up and giving a person a place to stay isn't going to solve anything. That person needs skills and be able to find a job so that he can support himself...without having to rely on public assistance. Not saying this is easy...but then again nothing in life is easy. But to just hand over taxpayer dollars is no solution without addressing the reason why the person became homeless in the first place

Its amazing to me that people think that the homeless have a logical choice. Next time you see a bum, look closely, would you take him home and hire him? Even to do yard work? I think not, street people are either mad as hatters or junkies or drunks. Out of work people have shelters (as bad as they are) and look for a roof over their heads. But the hardcore homeless are unemployable and most of them should be in institutions, but the institiutions were closed with the promise of community centers opening, but of course they never did. That was a Reagan program btw. State governments don't have the ability to create a good program without having money, and right now money for social programs is very far back on the Bush agenda. These are the forgotten people, they don't vote and the only thing we want from them is to go away.
A little "there but for the grace of God goes I" would go a long way here.

No, the state governments are more corrupt than the federal government.

Look, this is not a problem that can be solved by governments. This is an issue of compassion on the part of people with the capacity to help. If people don't step up, it won't get better.

It is handled by the State. Not one penny of your federal tax dollars go to help the homeless. Actually the National Debt is so high now that it barely pays the interest on it.

The politicians don't care about the homeless and the states won't do any better at the job than the Feds. The homeless don't vote. Non-profits with good backing are the only ones that have made any headway.

The federal government created it. All the US workers who have lost their jobs to the Global economy and outsourcing of jobs won't decline any time soon. If you are not homeless yet if may not be too long before you are pushing a shopping cart with your home in it.

Most of the homeless are mentally ill or chemically dependent.

We need more services for these populations, in Texas funding for these two groups was siphoned of into the criminal justice system and unless you are on probation or parole it is difficult to get services/treatment and the quality of theses services has decreased significantly due to contracts being awarded to the lowest bidder regardless of the quality of their program.

In Texas, some of this money also goes toward "faith based" initiatives... meaning that some people in "treatment" are not being introduced to 12-step programs, rather they are brought to church (only Christian churches, at least were I live). 12 step programs have a higher success rate than religious programming but that has been ignored.

No government should be required to 'fix' the homeless problem..... that is the job of private charities and the charity of individuals....

The government was never meant to be a crutch for the individuals of this country

In this free country, you have the right to succeed, just as you have the right to fail....

Is it great to voluntarily help your fellow man?? HELL YES. I do by donating to chariies that I believe in. But that does not mean it is the responsibility of government to act as a crutch thru tax monies.

I totally agree. At a state level, maybe more would be allocated to the homeless population. It appears that most of the charities are funded at a local level; churches, neighborhood organizations, etc.
