take it to a watchmaker, not a jeweler, and they'll open it up and tell you from looking at the movement, sometimes just looking at it from the outside you can tell. If it's too light, most of the time it's fake. And no, not all fakes will leave your wrist black. For example, all Cartier watches, be it quartz, automatic or wind up, they all have "Cartier" written inside the movement. If it doesn't say that, it's FAKE.

Not a big fan of cartier myself, i would imagine that the first tell tale signs is the face, bevel and clasp of the watch.
Depending on whether the watch is a gold carat or sterling silver, looking at the back of the watch for this print is a well highlighted sign, if the carat or metal is guinine.
The watch should come with some sort of guarentee, or certificated letter and presentation box.

That absolutely does not prove it is real. A battery is a battery. Unless it is an automatic which it does not sound like yours is. Take it to a jeweler, Cartier's are heavily faked. Not to mention expensive, that would be very nice of your brother in law to give you a couple thousand dollar watch?

Take it to a good Jewellers, they can tell pretty easily from the movement even if it's a really good one.
