Even computers not connected to the net can get viruses/trojans these days so all computers must be careful. I got 2 trojans of an old floppy disk I had lying around. Luckally my free antivirus software, Avira Anti-Vir, detected them and got rid of them right on the spot. I am connected to the web, but see how even when not you can still get infections. I recommend Avira Antivir. It's free, runs in the background, and has a nice new GUI...

A tech friend of mine highly recommended Zone Alarm Security Suite. It is a triple defense Firewall, Anti-spyware, Antivirus, Email security, ID Privacy protection, IM Protection, Parental Control, Spam & Phishing Blocker, Wireless PC Protection w/a yr of free updates (which updates constantly when ur online). Very user-friendly.

I bought mine at Best Buy for $69.99 (well worth the $)!

I can honestly recommend Symantec (aka Norton) for antivirus or any other security programs I have used their product for 5 years of more. My husband used others but when my computer had a problem Symantec saved me on more than occassion and I had watched my husband lose close to everything on his computer when he was using something else. Had McAfee for awhile on my new computer this year but removed it after the first month. They also have great support services if you need them. It has stopped quite a few intrusions for that I can not give enough praise .

These days, there are a wide range of anti-virus applications out there. In my opinion, they all do a great job. Those "tests" that jibberjab is mentioning are now out of date because AVG is now version 7.5 and not 7.1. I personally use AVG as it is free, has real time protection, and uses little RAM. You could go out and buy Mcafee and Norton, which dont get me wrong are great programs, but AVG does about the same thing. If you want a free one, go with AVG but if you are going to pay for one, go for Trend Micro or BitDefender which are both excellent. Good luck!

The best for me is still ANTIVIR. I suggest you try some of the above mentioned antivirus, then if you think it don't suit to your needs then try ANTIVIR.

BTW, ANTIVIR is updating its vdf very-very fast. Though it can make automatic update, I updated (force) it twice a day! (7:30am & 7pm). Good qualities of an antivirus is how fast it can catch viruses and if does not use lots of processes time.

Personally, I use the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not.

The best are probably NOD32 and Kaspersky. But they are payware. For freeware AV, you can choose from any of these:
1. Avast!
2. AntiVir
3. AVG
They are sufficient for your needs.

i think it would be kaspersky anti virus... low memory usage.. has a easy to learn interface... can catch a lot of malwares.. good scan speed.... unlike other anti viruses such as norton or mcafee which makes your computer very slow to load because they eat a lot of system resources... and they have very irritating pop up windows always showing up... go for kaspersky :)
