Except for spelling!; Aren't these words about the same? Here are a few examples: A suicide bomber considers his/her decision as a sacrifice but we see it as a suicide. The RELIGIOUS Jesus died as a sacrifice but if we look at the HISTORIC Jesus, his actions were suicide(He was a real man without powers(?) to some historians). Those firemen and police officers who went into the Twin Towers knew it was suicide but we see their actions as a sacrifice.

in a way they are the same but in a way they are not...suicide is the fact that you are killing yourself for a reason truly unknown...sacrifice, you are giving yourself up for someone or something...

you listed perfect examples but both of those words can be perceived in very different ways to different people

i see the terrorists who hijacked those planes and crashed them into the towers as suicide...but now, if you ask Osama or any other terrorist, they will say that it was a sacrifice

i see sacrifice as a person giving something or themselves up to help others...yes, jesus sacrificed himself

as for the firemen and police officers on September 11th, i am sure almost every single one of them saw themselves perishing in the towers but not all did...police officers, firemen, military members all sacrifice their time and even lives sometimes for humanity

AWESOME question by the way

I think the difference would be that anyone that commits suicide intends to die and every action they take is with the intent to die. A suicide bomber has every intention of dying, so it would be a suicide. They claim it's a sacrifice but I think they should refer to it more as a "sacrifice by way of suicide".

As far as I know, Jesus wasn't actually trying to die it was just that he was willing to die if he needed to. I think risking your life for someone and knowing there is a very good chance that you will probably die is a sacrifice. There was still a small chance that those firemen and police officers could have made it out alive so I wouldn't look at it as a literal suicide. They sacrificed their life because they weren't trying to die, they just were willing if it meant they could save others.

Suicide is an escape. An act of final desperation. Sacrifice is usually about love or to give up something for someone else.

Suicide is a single act of one life.
A suicide bomber commits suicide and murder.
The firemen going into the Towers were doing their job which always is a sacrifice due to the inherent dangers...I do not think they thought it was suicide....they do not go into areas that they know are an immediate threat to life. They do not go into buildings engulfed in fire that they know are unsafe.

Now i am not a religious person and i am only saying that because a lot of people are and i think that this question may upset some people. i am not upset i am just stating what i think...

Jesus did not kill himself. he did not have the control over the situation to avoid the crucifixtion he suffered. it was only accepted by him because he spoke with god and searched himself and found acceptance for what he was about to happen to himself.

It is not anywhere near the same as willingly taking your own life away.

He had powerful people after him wanting him dead and they in turn murdered him. we consider it to be a sacrifice because in the end he over came his fear and accepted his fate and forgave those who killed him.

The people who kill themselves so that they can kill others are not the same as Jesus Christ by any stretch of the imagination.

They have chosen to do this in the name of hatred. they do have the power to change this situation unlike jesus who had no choice to the end result.

Lets step away from topics that fuel emotions and try to be more objective.

If the government of Australia (Which is where I live) wanted to kill me because of stuff they did not like, and i knew they were coming i would run i would hide i would cry victim i would get a lawyer!!! I would do anything toi avaoid my demise. I would have little control but i would be trying to get some.

On the other hand, if i decided that i did not like the way Christians and muslims are at each others throats in the current day and i decided to teach them a lesson by loading my body with biological weapons and blowing you suckes up that is MY decision MY choice, My will.

That dear friend is the difference.

The guys who went in to help the people who had been murdered in that attack were acting out of love and respect for their country, their fellow men.

That is the other difference. They were not killing other people. they were sacrificing their own lives to help save others. A true act of sacrifice.

Terrorists were not trying to save any onae. they were trying to murder.

What would a man who just found out he may be going to jail for the rest of his life and have nothing to live for be sacrificing? What about euthanasia? Is that a sacrifice? To those suffering, it seems like a gain.

Suicide is the deliberate intention to terminate one's own life. The intention is the defining characteristic of the act. Self-sacrifice, on the other hand, is bringing about one's own death, but through the circumstances of death, you bring about another state of affairs. Therefore, the intention is not to die, but to bring about another end.
Culture & Choices
Inherent in all of us is the desire to live and survive it is our most basis instinct. And it is because of this that to sacrifice oneself or to commit suicide incurs deep ramifications.
When one forfeits his/her life for a ‘greater good’ or for another, ‘Culture’ deems it a brave and selfless act, but if one commits suicide ‘culture’ considers it shameful, cowardly and pitiful.
The individual choices in each case are the same ’relinquishing of personal life.
However, it is culture itself that creates the environment for both scenarios
So, our culture deems Jesus as sacrificing his life
and the bombers are suicide bombers.
But in their culture the bombers are maryters. sacrificing their lives for a cause.

To be or not to be is the question.

Suicide is a conscious choice to end your life without benefit to anyone. Usually, it brings more pain to the people left behind.

Sacrifice is a conscious choice to do something good for the benefit of others. If one makes this choice, even with the possibility of death being a possible outcome, it gives much more meaning to the choice being made and speaks of a love that is rare in our time.

Suicide bombing is not a choice made out of love because others are killed.

suicide is an act of giving up sacrifice is when you give to another. Example: Someone whom takes their life takes an easy road out of life and it benefits know one. Sacrifice is when your giving up something to benefit another or a situation. Jesus did not take his own life the people did but he was willing to give it for our sins. Something had to be given to get something in return (Salvation) to all. Suicide you do to yourself............Sacrifice is when you allow something to benefit another . If I had to make a choice between me or my child drying it would not be an easy choice to give up life but to have my son live would be greater then myself. A sacrifice is hard to give but it is given with love and compassion.

If you put it that way then it there is no difference between suicide and sacrifice. But then sacrificing is punishable in the law since you can go to jail if you try to commit suicide.
