Jack the Ripper is known for ending the Victorian era. (not completely, so do not get carried away on this notion). The Victorian era was a time of structure, community, and order. Jack the ripper, a man of the community, destroyed this notion. Victorianism is very ideal, of course negative things happened during this epoch, but they were usually ignored and sugar coded. Jack the Ripper revealed the negative side of humanity and destroyed Victorian ideals.

This does not answer you question entirely. However one thing that was much more prevalent in all households at the time was the slaughtering/butchering of animals.
Meat was not distributes at the grocery stores. There probably wasn’t a person who had not slaughtered or seen the slaughter any numerous types of fowl, pork, and beef. This made people a bit less squeamish when in can to disembowelment.
