You would perhaps be better to fit a venting system to enable the gas to escape naturally.A length of plastic drainpipe sunk into the ground as deep as you can get it, and raised about 3 m in the air should do for a start.
A call to your local Environmental health office may help

I would be very careful. Probably call in an expert! Methane gas is very dangerous and should be vented high into the air. I would think that only a properly installed venting system will help here. I would also suspect that it will not be cheap. I would also look into what kind of structural engineering was done on your foundation. I was expect the clay to move alot. With gas underneath, this could be a big problem for your foundation.

The clay, most likely bentonite, needs to be undesturbed. Leave your garden as it is, don't move that much clay to level it as you will increase the possibility that the methane gas will leak out, and it can seep into your home and kill you or cause an explosion. MOVE!

I have a question also. What were you thinking when you decided to purchase a home on an abandoned landfill?
