Yes (I assume you're referring to the United States)

Most powerful - maybe. Most influential still - maybe not.

However, our first and only real responsibility is to protect ourselves and our children and their children. We should do this as a moral obligation to them - our progeny.

At one time there seemed to be a majority opinion that the US should be a leader in worldwide efforts to alleviate suffering and poverty in the world. I was probably a follower of this viewpoint when younger. However, if appears that you cannot give to someone something that they did not strive for themselves, do not want or do not understand - be it democracy (if they do not achieve it themselves or strive for it then they do not understand or want it) or aid (to provide relief without a way to sustain it does nothing in the long run).

Therefore, many people in the US (from those I know and converse with) are forming the opinion that we should stick to our first responsibilities. Attempting to give to the rest of the world only seems to make them hold us in contempt and want to do away with us.

Only if it serves us politically, geographically, etc. There is genocide going on in Africa every day. Are we doing anything about it other than some covert special ops?
Nope… because all they have is sand! Now if they have oil and Haliburton can gain a Billion dollar contract or two, that’s a different story. We’d be helping them with democracy.

Only if they ask for help because there is a very thin line between being a helping hand that is protecting a country from a violent aggressor and looking like arrogant moral police.

The problem lies in that we (the U.S. Government) picks and chooses who to protect and when to protect them. Where was the U.S. when all the genocide killings were taking place in the 80's? We aren't protecting the citizens of Africa from all the rebel groups that are down there.

No, we have given up our Empire, let N. America go, and it is for the best to keep letting those enlarged 13 central colonies think that they should do everything before China overtakes them w/in 5 years.

We are hated throughout the world. They do no like us so why should we help them. I say from now on we should stay at home and protect ourselves. Our help is never appreciated and many times resented. Let them fend for themselves.
