Any music that goes onto you iPod needs to go via iTunes (available to download for free). However, this does not mean that any music you want has to come from iTunes. iTunes accepts any music from CDs and UNPROTECTED MP3 files. You will find that most music in proteced, especially that from file sharing (P2P) programmes.

Any music that fits into those descriptions HAS to be uploaded into your iTunes library if you want it on your iPod. When you transfer the music to the device, iTunes will automatically synced.

You can not simply open your iPod device and copy and paste files in.
