Hi, I drive a 1994 Dodge Caravan SE and I need a new transmission. First of all, peope keep telling me about a rebuilt transmission. Can I get a NEW transmission? If so, how much would it cost me? Anyhow, were can I go to get good service and a pritty good price? I live in Staten Island New York. Do you know any good name place were they would do a good job? How much does it usualy cost in a good place? How long would the warantee be? I thank you for your time and any information would be appreciated. I will be taking my car in this week and I will leave a best answer once the car is complete based on the information you have giving me. Thanks again :-)

Transmission trouble and caravans go hand in hand. We have rebuilt probably around 500 of those transmissions in the past 10 years. A dealership can get you a "new" transmission, but anymore it is actually a factory rebuilt transmission. Here in NC a Chrysler dealership wants around $1500 for that trans. If your old tranmission case is busted they will not give you a core credit and that will tack another $300- $500 on the price of the transmission. The dealership will also give you a 3year/36000 mile warranty on the transmission.
Unless there is MAJOR internal damage we can usually rebuild one of those trannys for around $900, parts, labor and a guarantee.
Ironhand said that:
"Automatic transmission shops have special regulations governing them beyond the normal auto industry precisely because they are so complex, and the customer is usually over a barrel at service/repair time."
I would disagree with that. We are 1 of only 3 rebuilders in our area, we do not have any special regulations that govern us. And as far as having someone over a barrel, well we treat each and every customer the same no matter what type of repair they are facing. Honesty is by far the best policy and along with reasonable rates it has kept us in business for 35 years.

Since I am here in NC I have no idea where you could take it in NY, but I wish you luck.

Yes, you can get a NEW transmission, but it isn't worth putting that sort of money in THAT old a vehicle. It would cost more than replacing the little van.
There are sources for a good rebuilt, and you can get a pretty good price if you shop around. You can also get a used unit from a wrecking yard even less expensively.
All that said, you will be better served to take the van to a local REPUTABLE transmission shop and have the one you have either repaired, overhauled, rebuilt, or exchanged, whichever is appropriate for you and your budget.
Automatic transmission shops have special regulations governing them beyond the normal auto industry precisely because they are so complex, and the customer is usually over a barrel at service/repair time.
I am sure that New York State has an automotive repair regulatory agency. i would call them and ask them how to find a reputable provider.
They most likely will not make any recommendations as to a specific shop, but they may offer a list of those who are deemed honest and reliable.

Good Luck
