After you put it on, smudge it with a makeup sponge or a Q-tip. The trick to not looky trashy is to not go overboard on the bottom part of your eyes. Keep it light in that area.

Cover Girl has an eyeliner that is self sharpening and it comes with a smudger on the bottom. Also, you can use black eye shadow and an eyeliner brush. Avon has a new type of gel eyeliner that comes in a little vat that is swept onto the eye with a thin pencil brush.

The trick that i have used is a kohl eyeliner gel/pencil, and a dark eyeshadow with a bit of sparkle. You should smudge with a qtip or sponge, and not over do it.. If you are interested in a few different make up tips you could try making faces by the late great kevin aucoin or the bobby brown make up book.

If you have an eyeshadow set, you can use the darkest shade to line eyes with, plus a good grey eyeliner. I use the Revlon's Colorstay Copper Spice and Cover Girl's Outlast eyeliner in Smoke. Grey isn't as harsh as black.

Use eyeshadow instead of eyeliner--this will give an effective smokey look. Purchase a small tipped brush for this type of application and blend! Also, use a charcoal gray eyeshadow instead of black.

use a liquid eyeliner. raise the skin from your eyelid with one finger and apply the liquid eyeliner just at the lash line. don't try to do a straight line, tho, do little lines like dashes -- --- --- --
then, when it is dry, use an eye pencil -- lifting the skin of the yelid again -- and go over the liquid eyeliner, connecting the dashes so it's one solid line.
under the eye, do the dashes just from the center of the eye out, and connect them as you did before. using an angled brush, go over the eye pencil with a plum or similar dark eye shadow (depending on your eye color). this will help set the eye pencil. use this same color in the crease of your eye, and extend it out a little bit to make your eyes look bigger.
if you don't wear contacts, pull your lower lid down and use an eye pencil to line the part right next to your eye.

Bare Essentuals line Bare Minerals.
All of their liners and shadows are powder. Loose powder. So it's easier to get that smoky look.
AND invest in good brushes. Don't buy the cheap stuff.
