I am using Sun Java SE8. It comes with an Oracle driver and I was able to access the database using it. However when I tried to load a driver in a java application program in Sun Java using:
DriverManager.registerDriver(new com.sun.sql.jdbc.oracle.OracleDriver());
I get "package does not exist". What do I need to do to make the driver package visible to the program

It suppose you must be having Oracle client installed in your m/c. Please check up ORACLE_HOME\jdbc\lib, where you will be getting the file - classes12.jar. Include this file in the classpath where running your application. The Oracle Data Access packages are present in this jar file.

That package (com.sun.sql.jdbc.oracle) is not part of the standard distribution, and must be an "extra" included with Studio Enterprise. I am not familiar enough with Sun SE, but there must be a jar file somewhere that they expect you to include with your application. That jar file (that contains all those "com.sun" extras) will need to be on the classpath in order for the JVM running your program to find them.
