If you are going free, avast is the best one I know of. AOL just launched a new program which provides excellent protection, which is based on the world re-nouned kaspersky software. If you are willing to pay for software (or look around for cracks) go w/ eset nod32. It's the best I know...

Norton Internet security is the best it will block any computer that trys to hack into you from the web for thirty Min's and send a detailed report to Microsoft and the authorities and to u as to the whereabouts of said computer

For me, it still ANTIVIR.
Check all antivirus out there, but then don't forget to try also ANTIVIR. Though it can automatically update its files, I force it to update twice! (7:30am & 7pm), to guard myself from fresh viruses out there.
Yes, I didn't have any virus for more than 6 years now.

The STRONGEST I found is PANDA (around $70/year service). But BEST Personal level is AVG.
