I can understand why you tip a lot now. The minimum wage in Britian in dollars is $10.21, this is the reason we are bad tippers

In most places, there is a minimum wage, then there is a minimum wage for food service and other places that get tips. Tips are typically counted as part of the wages in these cases, so whatever someone thinks their employees will make in tips is cut out from the minimum wage. I know, it's dumb, especially with bad tippers, but it's the way it is.

Yes there is a minimum wage in the US. Here it is 5.35 an hour. Those that rely on tips are paid under minimum wage because their tips makeup for what their wage would be {and in some cases make far more then the required minimum wage}. I personally have never worked a minimum wage job or a job that required tips. Thank god for college educations!

The federal Minimum wage is $5.15, but most states raise it due to the cost of living in that state. And people who work for tips, do not have to make minimum wage.

Well, that's actually 2 different questions.

First, yes there is a Federal minimum wage. Plus, some states have a higher minimum wage than the federal one.

Second, those who make a living on tips are paid substantially less than minimum wage. So they rely on tips to get them at least to minimum wage (and beyond).

the minimum wage is 5.15 an hour, but some states are above and below the federal set amt., some states there is no minimum wage and in indian tribes in the us it is different b/c they set it themselves

also, waitresses and anyone else who gets tips dont get minimum wage, they can get less than the federal minimum wage, it depends on the employer

if you dont get enough tips then u dont get enough to get to minimum wage, thats why most waiters try to be very friendly and rely on the generous customers, but they arent paid that much less than minimum wage anyways

Your waitress and waiters make less than minimum wage. Sometimes, they only get $2.15 per hour. It is the hardest job to do and get paid so very little for. Most people who go out to eat do not tip and that is rude considering those people served you. I would hope that when you visit the US you will make sure to tip at least 15% of your bill. Thank you.

There are two different minimum wages. One is for most workers. The other is for wait staff. It is around 2.40 an hour, plus tips. That is why they rely on tips. If they do not make up to the standard minimum, they our out of luck.

I live in Florida, which is a "Right to work" state. I'm still trying to figure out what that is. I've lived here 7 years and I believe min. wage has upped 2 times. At Wal-Mart, they'll start U at $6.25. I used to work in Missouri and I got payed more there! I always tip 15-20%.

OK so now that you understand why
you should tip properly in the US,
and you admit that "you"(English) are bad tippers, please do US servers a favor and educate your friends who may visit at anytime on what is appropriate and why.
Thanks for caring enough to ask !!
