Your tank more than likely has a bad case of Green Algae. This is the result of 2 things. Either you may be leaving the aquarium lights on for too long or the tank is getting in too much direct sunlight. You can correct the problem by getting a timer for the light and limiting it to be on to no more than 8 hours a day if its in a light part of a room and creating just a little shade. Clean the tank extremely well, change the filter, and do regular water changes of 20% of your water weekly and the problem should go away.

Your problem is most likely ammonia. Especially if it is giving off a harsh odor. Ammonia is basically the build up of feces at the bottom of the tank. Do you gravel vacum? If not, I would sugest this. Basically what it is, is a vacuam that you use to take out water (resulting in a water change) the only difference is that you use it in the gravel and it lifts it up, stirs it around and then takes out all the waste. Some people think that a water change is just taking a percentage of water out and replacing it, when in reality you actually have to take the dirty water out. Another step is to make sure you are changing your filter cartridges once amonth. You can also try a product call "Phos-X" which is a filter pad you put in the filter as the last step, so after the carbon, and this removes all the phosphate from the water...whcih results in nitrite/nitrate. This will help a lot. Also, try not to change your water that often. New tanks go through what is called a cycle. It is when all the chemicals basically settle downs. This usually occurs a week or two after your tank is set up. It does turn cloudy for a few days, but then goes away. The more water you keep taking out, the harder its going to be to cycle. How many fish are in the tank? You may have too many. Although five gallons may seems big, its not. Usually you can only put one or two fish in there. Remeber that there should only be one inch per gallon. So you have 5 gallons to work with. So if the fish "gets" to be 2.5 in, he alone is using 2.5 gallons and that gives you another 2.5 gallons to use. Good Luck and hope this helps. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Can you give more info? How large is it? What kind of fish do you have? What are your nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia? Is the water green or is the algae growing on the sides of the tank or aquarium ornaments?
From the information you have so far, all I can say is make sure your nitrates are low and your nitrite and ammonia is zero, reduce how much you feed your fish, make sure your tank isn't in direct sunlight, do a 20% water change, and turn your aquarium light off for a couple of days (when you turn it back on, reduce the amount of time it is on).

Sounds like you have the aquarium too close to the window. Too much sun makes it green (green algae) As for the cloudiness, that may be due to too much fish food, too little cleaning, and again , too much growth of algae.

Clean the tank really well. That stuff is probably already stuck on the inner glass. To give the tank a serious cleaning, scrub and bleach. Rinse with lots of water, dry in the sun and then clean again. You have to remove all traces of detergent and bleach so the fish will not get poisoned.

Well, get some algea drops for your tank. This sounds like an algea attack of your tank. :o) This is caused by direct sunlight, or if you leave your light on a lot. Try the algea dorps, and if this is not efective, do a 20% water change by siphoning out you tank. (A siphon is like a fish tank vaccum, it will get rid of the bad toxins that build up on the bottom of your tank.)

If you have a smaller tank it is hard to keep it away. I have a 55 gallon with an undergravel filter and a filter that hangs over the back. I never have to clean it or anything. I say the bigger the tank you have the easier it is to take care of.

it depends on the fish mostly if it is like a gold fish (or one that is good with other fish) than git that fish that eats or possible consider a cleaner shrimp. if you have a bata (or a fish that does not play well with others) than clean the tank and get a filter. but remember a filter does not fix the problem you'll still have to clean it, only less often

do a good water change and then turn off the lights, your aquarium is getting too much light, cover the back of the tank if it is near a window, leave the lights off during the day and turn off the lights when you go to bed

Sounds like you have an algae problem... Go to the pet store (Petsmart people are usually very knowledgeable) and get some advise ... While there buy a Plecostumus fish... Pictured at the link below... They eat algae.
