Less of a stigma regarding divorce and cohab situations, for a start

Marriage 30 yrears ago was really till death do ye part. No matter how bad the marriage was on either party it was a shameful act to leave a marriage. Nowadays it is something that has changed, mostly for the better, now if a person finds themselves in a marriage that is not a "good" marriage they can leave but years ago it would have being something that could only really be hoped for but never to be done. However in saying that it does give some people an easy way out of the commitment and the work involved in making a marriage work. There are two sides to everything, the good does outway the bad in this in my opinion as i waas once married to a person who thought our kids were wepons to hurt me with and that i was there for him to take his anger out on so as no one else would see the real him.

the cohabitation in the modern world is something that is the safest way of being in a commited relationship but if it does go bad and it ends then you can still say that you were never married because even now when you say you were married there is still something there that puts some people off. it most be how we were brought up as kids or something.

as for the reasons for the changes are to many to mention however it can be put down to the ever changing demands on people and on the "social rules" changing if you will. it will be a question i think that will be a hard one to solve. please let me no if you ever do figure the reasons for the whole thing

I can think of a few:-
1. Females are more likely to have their own careers now than before and are therefore less reliant on their husbands income.
2. Marriages are under far more stress than was the case before. House prices have gone through the roof and people have far more personal debt.
3. Traditional male heavy indusrtry, shipbuilding, mining, steel production etc; has almost ceased to be in the UK The modern world of "the office" is more suited to female interpersonal skills, so the balance of employment has probably swung in favour of women. But I have no proof of that.
4. In the days when married men were the so called breadwinner, they could claim a married mans' tax allowance. I don't think that exists any longer, so there's no financial incentive for marriage.
5. There use to be huge social pressure from relatives of the couple for them to get married. That seems to have almost disappeared, in much the same way that the social stigma of being unmarried and pregnant has gone. Because of this, many marriages that would have taken place when a woman found herself in this condition no longer take place. Indeed I often feel that young women are financially better off if they don't get married.
6. Because so many people are now separated, when they co-habit with a new partner they are in no position initially to re-marry. Once they've been living together anyway for a few years, where's the incentive to marry.

There are steps you can take to actually build a strong, stable marriage and avoid divorce. Read here https://tr.im/RcpbG

Here are some key steps to apply to your marriage:

- Start by understanding and being informed.

You can never be too informed about tools, methods and studies about building successful marriages. Understand the risk factors like your age and maturity at marriage can determine how successful it will be, the anatomy of an affair and what you can do after infidelity. Understand the success factors like the personal and psychological circumstances that will influence your marriage, what are the tools and approaches available to you in dealing with conflict, and numerous other relevant data. All this information is readily available to you whether through self-help material, through a counselor, support group or other venues. In fact, we have made it our commitment to provide these to you in different formats to help you make the best marriage you can.

The thing is, remember, this is information is not available for you to begin hyper-psychoanalyzing your relationship, yourself and your partner. It's not a matter of spewing trivia for the sake of conversation ' information is there for you to ponder over and internalize to help you transform yourself and your marriage. That includes maturing to such a point that you become more competent in your knowledge but more prudent in approach.

Marriage is being redefined as any cohabitive relationship. Marrige will be irrelavant soon. Once same sex "marriage" is sanctioned by a State (and then by every state -14th Amendment).
We then will define commual living as marriage. Why should the definition stop at a couple. Since society sanctions marriage, it can also define it (part of the reasoning from MA Supreme Court).

The womans liberation movement allowed them to control unwanted births thereby ending many marriages.
Cohabitation is now considered the norm
Marriages of today dont last today because spouses dont put out as often as they should and the other party goes looking.
