There are parents who successfully raise their children without physical discipline, but they still have situational control... it takes exrtra effort, commitment and patience, but the kids are amazing and bright.
But not every family may have the foundations for this approach (not pointing fingers); in that case, physical discipline is better than none at all.

They have no such hang ups in the states especially southern ones.

ABSOLUTELY when I was a child if i misbehaved I certainly knew it I got 3 strikes then out
