Most teachers these days have university training. If you get a lesser qualification you will not off the bottom rung of the teaching career ladder. In its early days, the Open University made a fortune out of non-graduate teachers wanting a degree to get promotion. Also, it is highly unlikely you will qualify as a teacher without doing full-time study on the way.
If you are already working, you could look at doing a university degree part-time. If you are in London you could apply to Birkbeck College, or (anywhere) you could enrol with the Open University. Be warned this takes a long time and is hard work.
Uni these days is no promise of a good job, but you need to go to Uni to get most decent jobs. If it were not so the Government would not have 18 year olds over a barrel with student loans!

How can you teach if you haven't been taught? You can learn child care at college but thats not the same thing... University is great though, apart from the debt. If it's youre life's dream then 3 years learning isn't a big deal. It's just a few lectures, a bit of work experience and lots of fun meeting new people and socializing. Plus at the end of it you know you can give children the real education they need! It would be hard to get a job without a degree, especially seeing as hundreds of teachers are being made redundant atm.

Yes, it's now possible to take a teachers training course that allows you to be a teacher, then you work your way up with experiance.

not really no, there will be very few schools that would employ you without a proper teaching qualification
get to uni and get a degree and then maybe a pgce or do a b.ed
