The Captains Mast , where someone is brought up on charges, in accordance with the UCMJ, is held in different places depending on the ship. It got its name because they used to be hauled off to the aftermast. Today it could be in the legal office of an aircraft carrier.

It's called captains mast not mass! Mass is for clergy not captains. captains mast is usually held in the officers wardroom. The dining room for officers though it can be held anywhere the captain wants. the function of captains mast is to hold court and usually to give out punishment. Though some times captains mast is good to see if you are worthy of an award such as citation or medal. The former however is the usual reason.

Captain's Mast is a naval tradition and falls under Art. 15 of the UCMJ. In the Army/Air Force the same procedure is called "Office hours". Masts are a non-judicial proceedings where the Commanding Officer judges facts presented by the investigating officer and defendant's advocate. No lawyers are allowed. Punishment is limited to reduction in grade, forfeiture of pay, restriction, or assignment to a correction custody unit for not more than 30 days. They are serious affairs not to be taken lightly. Decisions can be appealed, but it will proceed to a Summary/Special/General Court where punishments are much harsher.
The CO will determine Mast location. In some cases, the CO may want to make the Mast public and in others, he may want it kept discreet. Also depends on the ship and what space is adequate for the proceeding. All the Masts I have been involved with were held in the CO's office.

The Captain's mass is usually held in his belly region and can serve both as beer ballast or a life preserver if washed overboard.
Hope this helped,
:)
