You did right,
the reason these people treat others like a**holes is because they don't get a taste of their own medicine, they think others are too scared. good on you, it proves that.....REVENGE IS A DISH, BEST SERVED COLD!!

Yes on some occations i think you wife is right, it is better to be the bigger person especially in cases of bullying and when you are dealling with someone you need to have contact with on a regular basis ie a work collegue, but seeing as he has the obvious attitude of a racist pig and is someone you would now know not to be a potential friend and only lives 4 doors down i would say f**k him but at least you now know his true attitude and where you stand. No don't help him and if asked why tell the truth.

Apologies to your wife but I think you did exactly the right thing, it costs nothing to be polite and the colour of your skin should not be a factor. The person who needs to be a bigger person is your new nieghbour who should say sorry the first chance he gets. If I was you I would think twice about accepting it but then I suppose your wife would say you were as bad as him. Accept an apology if one is offered (which I doubt) and let by gones be by gones. If you don't get one then it's his loss to have made a friend.

I would have left a note on their door or car saying I stopped by last night to tell you your car lights were on.
I would have helped the guy in the morning,if my wife had asked.
but I wouldn't have said a word to the guy.

You behaved like an utter gentleman in the circumstances. He was an utter pig in his behaviour and you should not be blamed for not wanting to help him further after what happened. Nobody has the right to speak to you like that, irrespective of who you are or what they are. You already WERE the bigger person by walking away and not reacting aggressively as most people would.

You had every right to be angry and hurt, but by helping them you could have changed their attitudes and shown them that they were wrong about you in the first place, and diffusing any future hostility, and also created a better, friendlier neighborhood. By not helping, you confirmed their worst misconseptions.

(ok, i would probably not have said motherfucker) but it just goes to show - reap what you sow baby.

No, you are in the right. Some people you cant be nice to and sometimes it is good to give someone a taste of their own medicine. He was very rude to you so I feel you are right on this one.

I think I would have reacted the way you did. I know what we "should" do but it is sure hard to help someone who hates for no reason. It makes you wonder if YOU needed a jump would he give you one?? I doubt it.
