I think the first answer has it right, in that one is to poor to have a pot for basic bodily functions. It may also have something to do with such a person having to use the cookpot for bodily functions, and then returning the pots to service for meal preparation.

I would have to say that it is a British expression.I think that if you are poorer than poor all that you have left is your piss!!!!
Which wherever you hail from is pretty bad!
There is also the expression " Things were so bad I was so broke I didn't have a pot to piss in"

It is derived from an old expression that someone is so poor that they "don't have a pot to piss in"

before we had toliets, people would urniate in bowls.
If you still urinate in a bowl because you don't have a toliet,
