Different things motive different people. You have to determine what motivates you. Money, attention, recognition, training, growth potential, etc. Look for a company that will provide you with what it is you want from life. Remember that there is no future in any job. The future lies in the person who holds the job. Be a person of integrity and always do your best, not for the company but for yourself. Make sure you can look in the mirror each day and know that you have done your job the very best it can be done. Most employees don't do this even when someone is standing over them. You will be successful in most careers if you will persevere, be positive, loyal and a person of integrity.

Since my career is in academia, money was the last of my thoughts. I think that you have to find something you really love, something that moves you and follow that. Of course, be realistic, too. We can't all be movie stars or professional athletes, but if you follow your natural calling you will be happier than if you were making hundreds of thousands a year.

You should mix you passion with your job (sex don't count). For instance, I love music, but it is a hard business, so I am taking music business and regular business classes. I want to own a voice study and a record label one day, but I know that is a lofty dream so I will rely on my business degree till I get off the ground. Money is a factor, but should equal the enjoyment you get.

My main motivation is if I like my job. If I hate where I am working I will not stay no matter how much they pay. I would rather be happy than rich.
